Hi,

I think it was with PEAR 1.4, when "channels" were introduced in pear. 
So e.g. eZ has its own channel, through which they allocate there 
packages, phpUnit has its own channel ...
Everybody who is working with pear knows at least pear.php.net, and this 
one should be available from the beginning. But it have to be possible, 
that extension developers can add additional channels.
