Hi Martin,
well I can suggest something, but the decision are made by the core team.
Also for the core I don't think that a selection of a library can be
ultimatively yet. There are still to many developents in this range. As
version 5.x will be a completly new start that doesn't matter. It is
possible to have this library for 4.x and that for 5.x.

But see the warnings of Peter Klein in the HCI list, not to use prototype.
I also could imagine an ajax service. Then it would be possible to
change the libraries behind. Think of the currently changing data
transportation formats: xml, JSON, serialized arrays, ... a service
could make that transparent for the user. Some libraries use an
invisible iFrame to send the data.
