Some thoughts:

1.) For the beginning let's assume we build a 4.x extension library that
demonstrates how 5.x core could work.

2.) Extensions build upon this library should be foreward compatible
against the core of 5.x. That is rather an ideal not a garantee.

The success depends on close cooperation with the 5.x core team. Extension
deveopers will need migration pathes from 4.x towards 5.x. This would be a
path of migration in advance instead of ahead. Most usefull for new
extensions, not for existing.
