It is ugly but it is the only way to support 4.5 LTS.

Regarding "there is little chance a clean realurl will find its way to 
TER" - you are wrong here. There is code for RealURL 2.x, which is work 
in progress, written from scratch and much cleaner than many parts of 
the current core :) However it is a private repo at the moment.
