Theory. ;)

In practice it has shown to cause troubles or being complex work to add
specifics to generic models provided by an independent upstream (like
fe_user).

It's really tough as there are good arguments for both approaches. It's
quicker to jumpstart on existing code, but it's more flexible and easier
to start from ground if you need to adapt things to your liking.
