But it is not always desirable to use the cutting edge version of PHP in terms of application stability. The dotdeb version changes quite frequently to reflect the most current vanilla version, but it is - at least in our case - impossible to revalidate the applications every few weeks for ensure compatibility. IMHO keeping a stable environment for applications is the main reason to stick with slow-paced, long running distributions like Debian or CentOS.
