[TYPO3-core] Gridelements in the core?

Hi,

On Twitter a small discussion started with the question "gridelements
for the core. what's missing?"

The main question is of whether it should be included in the core at all.
The general policy is to include the really necessary parts and leave
the rest to extensions. There are already cases of hardly maintained
parts which are also not really necessary and which should in fact be
moved to normal extensions. There is already a forge issue about this.

Extensions with similar functionality (automaketemplate, templavoila)
are not part of the core.

One could argue that it is a bit strange that BE layouts are included in
the core, and the next logical step -- gridelements -- are not. IMO BE
layouts was meant to fix the rather limited and rigid four-column
backend layout with left, normal, right and border. The areas in BE
layouts are still connected to "colpos" values and can be rendered in
the frontend with the usual template-marker-system.

What do you think?
