Right, that was exactly what I was thinking.

Your question was about implementing an image editor in the core. For
this functionality it is not wise to implement it in the core, because
most people don't want to have this functionality by default, but by
choice, which means an extension is a better option. I wouldn't give my
editors an image editor in the TYPO3 backend ;-)
