I agree! I would even emphasize this in the tutorial. "If you want to
contribute" / "If you don't want to contribute", ... I'd say that many
people perhaps don't plan to contribute, just want to test some patch
and report whether it works or not. For those, they definitively should
create a branch anyway because it's then very easily to change mind and
provide another better patch. If you don't plan to contribute and change
your mind, it is then "more complicated" to go back the right way.
Not creating branches should really be limited to those who only want to
run their website with HEAD of master.
