  Well if used editing in the workspaces practically means that you have 
to create the versions by hand and that you can use the workflows for 
these versions. Whenever you edit a record directly in the workspace 
you'll see an error-message because that's not permitted.

Imho one of the features which never really made sense but because it 
was technically possible this option was provided.
