I could only reproduce the problem with the old page tree; the new 
pagetree (at least the one in core) doesn't listen to the title length 
setting.

As side effect the User settings dialogue is refreshed again after the 
flash message that the settings are updated is shown. The message isn't 
visible after this update (only during the update through the light mask).

Couldn't it trigger something like the "normal" ExtDirect pagetree 
update? That would be a lot faster.
