You mean the PHP module 'xml'? This is one of the required modules (this 
is checked in the 1-2-3 installer and an exception is thrown if the 
required modules are not installed).

Required: filter, gd, json, mysql*), pcre, session, SPL, standard, xml, 
zlib.

*) DBAL will modify the database modules to sets of possible 
combinations which are supported by the current DBAL version.
