Yes, I'd prefer to have that workaround for 4.4.

Again the reasons for that: If we add an icon (and thus, recreate the
sprites for 4.4.5), then every editor needs to clear his browser cache
when updating the minor version.

Personally, I want to keep the maintenance releases as smooth and
transparent as possible.
