this belongs to the background-gradients. the sprite-icons are replaced 
very fast...
but there have been people who prohibited to use css gradients for new 
browser and fallback to a single colour in ie6. This is so called clean 
up. I tend to try using gif background images wherever possible or do a 
fallback.
But this is not part of beta3 which just should work.
