OMG! There are many editors out there (also freeware / OpenSource) which 
  feature real time syntax checking. Even with checks for variable names 
which haven't been used before, etc.

Yes, VIM is cool, but code without syntax errors is über-cool (actually, 
I think it's a basic requirement)
