It uses a hidden input field. The "display field" (called _hr = human
readable) is always a text field and will get a "*****" after losing
focus (with the password being moved over to the real field).

AFAIK the only solution is really to work with two fields and copy the
value from one to another and change display property to show the one or
the other field. But this will be more "intrusive" to our cleaned up
templated XHTML of the install tool. :)

Maybe the hidden clone can be created by JS on demand.
