I know that this is going to be  bit off-topic, but I recall that we usually provided patches for
compatibility (at least with new browsers) also to older releases. So I am more than surprised to
hear that 4.2 doesn't work officially with PHP 5.3. IMHO any real compatibility issues regarding 5.3
should IMHO be applied to 4.2 except those numerous notices and warning that 5.3 started to log.
These are no blockers, only annoyances.
