It makes sense, but it's a big change. I would say it's too late to do 
that for 4.4. I'll commit your patch as is (probably tomorrow), but you 
can already open the discussion about your proposed clean up. BTW I 
would do that in the typo3.projects.v4 NG rather than dev.
