actually I first was a bit undecided and even wanted to ok the commit 
for the 4.2 branch. However, after giving the issue some more thoughts 
I'd rather like to have the change reverted as

* it changed/introduced new behavior
* makes extensions depend on patch level releases

PLease note though that I realy like that feature and I also recognize 
that it's an quite old issue. It's just that there're some things which 
are probably not good to have (see points above). Maybe the fix could be 
a reason for users/developers to upgrade to 4.3 sooner rather then later 
though.

P.S. As you may notice, I'm replying late. However you still committed 
it to the 4.2 branch withtout having my ok! When in doubt and in case I 
do not answer for whatever reason, please do not commit to the 4.2 
branch, rather send me a separate Mail which will then probably catch my 
attention more easily. It just happens from time to time that for work 
reasons I can not follow the core list.
