maybe then both, as providing a highres-image for download must also be
possible.

yes InDesign might not be that fast, but you're able to style the
catalog individually, apply conditional text-formatting, drop-shadows,
alpha-masks etc and do some fine tuning afterwards ;) So it depends on
the requirements, the layout and the needed visual quality what solution
is better. It was just an example anyway ;)

if color channels got properly tweaked, then yes - if only converted to
CMYK there's no difference if it's pre-converted or if the RIP (raster
image processor) is doing it.
I think we should move the discussion to the dev-list - there's already
a topic created by Stefan.
