I'd stick to conventions.
User DO expect so see the password asteriks stuff, whether it makes 
sense or not.
Let's do pros and cons:
- Pro
People are used to it
We get things done and could worry about important stuff rather than 
discussion really minor issues for ages.
-Cons
We use one line (roughly 11px) on the screen
