One more annotation, I hope its not too late. My apache throws an 500
internal Server Error:
/var/www/domain/typo3/gfx/.htaccess: FileETag not allowed here

The FAQ mentions to add
 AllowOverride Indexes

but to make FileETag work in .htaccess, I had to add
 AllowOverride Indexes FileInfo

Tested on Ubuntu 8.04 Apache 2.2.8
