Yes, it is possible. But it is not very efficient (needs time to merge and test all versions separately, etc). I would prefer to have one single extension version for the current and previous TYPO3 branch (i.e. current RealURL must work for 4.2 and 4.3 and should work with 4.1). This is easier to maintain :)
