yes, you are right. Patch #9596 seems to work with 4.2 as well. I now 
tested it completely this way:

1) used TYPO3 4.2.4-dev
2) applied patch #9596
3) emptied typo3temp

et voilà.

I did everything as before except for using the 4.2.4-dev (before I 
patched 4.2.3, which seemingly led to the old SYSTEM ERROR js message).

I will attach an extension to the bugtracker entry that can be used to 
test it.

But from my point of view it is working... so +1 to get this into 4.2.4.

I used rtehtmlarea_bugfix_9596_typo3_4-2_v2.patch found in the 
bugtracker [1].
