Unfortunately the attached patch does not apply cleanly to TYPO3 4.2.

Additionally it misses a needed change for backend thumbnail generation
(like mentioned by Alexander in a bugtracker note).

Find attached v4 for trunk/4.3 and for 4.2 with the above mentioned
change taken into account.
