agreed, but this makes only sense if we have something like a switch to 
load the uncompressed script. I would do it the orher way

Imho the function in template.php should take care of:
* look for scriptname.compressed.js
* use that one if you don't set a switch to "use uncompressed" for 
debugging purpose
