Hey Tobias,

I didn't fully follow this thread, but in the BE AJAX interface 
(typo3/classes/class.typo3ajax.php and typo3/ajax.php), strings in 
different charset work. I used prototype for this as well. First, I had 
some trouble with the charsets (e.g. in the pagetree) and then I solved 
it. I haven't looked at your code yet, but if it's not too much of a 
hassle, I'd recommend you hooking into the existing interface, less code 
and stress for you... (don't know if you use it already).
