Here is the final version that also adds check for ipv6 addresses. Since Steffen had his +1 earlier and Masi does not really object against the patch, I am going to commit it by the end of the day if there no other objections :)

The patch has "small" suffix because I omitted tab/spaces and line trims from it for better reading.
