+1 based on testing

And does that still work? I couldn't test that, because I don't know any 
extension that uses this.

I can't say if this is the proper solution or not, but it is a definite 
improvement. I agree with Jeff that things could still be improved, but 
I think it would require too many changes and would not be suitable for 
the 4.2 branch.
