Beginners will not be able to do any better even with Steffen's extension because the whole work with TS templates is not described properly anywhere (except some books). It is a question of tutorials and education. Unlike many other systems TYPO3 does not have good beginner's level tutorials :(

A completely different thing it is not, at least not in my eyes, as it
provides an easy way to get a clean view to see what is configured
already. This counts for experts like Steffen, who coded the ext, which
he would not have done if he had not thought it useful for himself as
well, intermediate users as myself and beginners. Imagine a tutorial for
beginners that guides them to that view and then gives explanations of
how to find it all out in tsref.
You know how I finally found out how all this FE rendering stuff is
done? By exploring css_styled_content/static/setup.txt and
constants.txt. Not simple, but effective, but I am sure that that
overview would have helped me a lot.

Other than that you are right, we need beginner's tutorials, perhaps a
revival of fc bigfeet :-)
