That is exactly what we ended up with in Laax and why we didn't put in
disabled items.

My suggestion would be to try some dimmed background-color on the whole
button-group to see if the would bring back that feeling of a grouped
toolbar. Other than that, let the RM (Ingo) decide wether he wants the
individual icons aligned or just the button-group as whole.
