I expect that this will take up to three hours in the end which I
currently don't have.

I agree with you that your idea is smarter and will allow more control
in the logging process.

But I rather see my solution in the core now rather than waiting for
some time or someone else to implement your ideas which might miss the
4.2 release.

Could you agree that my patch gets in the core now but we aim to improve
it for the 4.2 release if we find the time?

That way my patch will be a small safety net in case we miss the 4.2
release.
