Well it probably isn't better. I think it's the same, and we had no problems 
using that code. But I guess it doesn't make sense to patch the core for this 
rather unusual setup. I'll include the patch in the DBAL extension and 
explain how to use it the manual.

Anyway, if any of you have the time to test this, that'd be great.
