Franz, can you try this patch again? Michael gave me a +1 for the 
original one, but you had troubles with it.

Stanislas, what do you think of it? You were interested in mail related 
issues.

With this patch in 4.0.1 we should have solved all mail and charset 
related issues. So it'd be great if this one hasn't to wait for the next 
release.
