My thoughts too. Running a "svn up" at root-level of the branch you are
in is a must before start working with a working copy.

Unfortunately I could not reproduce Stucki's problem, so we will
probably never know what really happened. Or can you reproduce it
somehow, Michael?

Btw, a nice "CVS to Subversion" migration documentation is in the SVN Book:

Check out Appendix A "Subversion for CVS Users". This points out the
"few" conceptual changes that you need to consider when migrating from
CVS to SVN.
