Impressive - we only used the Content.xml file in the site package to
(re-)import content from time to time.

You'll have to create a "dummy" conference first and some speakers etc.
There are commands for that, have a look at the ReadMe file in the
TYPO3.Conference package (in the folder Documentation)

I'm not in the position to decide this, but I guess it won't be a
problem if it is an official TYPO3 event.

Especially the interactive functions (login, Speaker profile, paper
submission...) would need testing.
Also, if you want typo3.org users to be able to login, we need to set up
the Single-Sign On mechanism on typo3.org. What are your plans there?
