Well, it would be Demo/FrontendTests, but maybe it would be better to
have Tests/Frontend or something like that. Then we can extend to new
"types" of tests in Demo, without polluting the toplevel directory.

Sounds reasonably, and if one wants to use Selenese, that is still
possible - as PHPUnit has a method for that. And since you have more
experience with Selenium, just go for it - we need a good suggestion,
even if we refactor it later! ;)
