I read the configuration variable description and the give a little glimpse over what
is possible. Would it be possible to set this up somewhere so we can try and look
how it works ?

The same as above.
As long as you can't see and try how this works it isn't really easy to say if it would
be a nice-to-have feature or unnecessary at all.

While sponsorship is something you can still imagine how it works I have no clue at
all what SCM integration would do (Something whith notes which get attached ...?!?)
