IIRC this is what extension role (or role2, don't remember) did.

The problem I see with this approach is that we don't have real role.

Actually the need I had and could not correctly resolve was a way to 
combine role with user groups:

Roles: news editor / content editor / master editor
Groups: subtree1 / subtree2

Someone should have a way to be news editor in subtree1 and content 
editor in subtree2 but currently all ACLs are being somehow "merged" or 
"flattened".

This is still one step further as described but I guess we have to get a 
concept of role in se, and not mix up backend usergroups with roles (or 
refactor part of them).
