The visible editing area is a very minute thing compared to all the 
missing functionality. Apart from the wizard Kay already mentioned, the 
transformations (e.g. bold <-> strong), cleaning pasted content, styling 
of content and use of certain classes for some elements, TYPO3 specific 
tags, etc.

Then there is the matter of being compatible with all the browser 
version (and some buggy sub-versions of various browsers).

It's a lot of work to get where HTMLarea e.a. currently are...
