I guess I just misunderstood the problem.

It's about unCHECKING (not uninstalling) all new system extensions while 
executing step 3 of the update wizard. Since there is nothing to update 
then, the wizard says "update failed", which is just misleading but not 
totally wrong.

So I am able to reproduce this bug.
