[TYPO3-v4] New Sprite API question

Hi all,

I must admit I a bit lost with the Sprite icons API, as there was so 
much action these last few days. I know it's in the core now, but how 
much is it used? If I look at my 4.4-dev BE I still see a lot of image 
tags being used (for example for all records icons). Is their 
replacement planned for later or have I missed something entirely?
