I guess that would work... but it looks more like a workaround :p
I would like to have a "clean" solutions...
and I mean it's just as simple as making a function public instead of 
protected... hopefully this will be in the core at some point, although 
there is currently not much feedback from the devs as I guess they are 
pretty busy with FLOW3 1.0...
