That's a very neat idea. would be something that could be considered to 
be included in the core.
I created a slightly modified version that works with Fluid 1.3+ and 
added it to the wiki:

In contrast to your version it takes the layout from
plugin.tx_yourextension.view.layoutVariant which can also be overridden 
in the plugin flexform.
