I was too, at the beginning and had the EXACTLY SAME thougs as you have. 
But all in all I am very happy and suprised what is possible with 
extbase and how easy it can be done.
Yes - at the beginning everything takes (much) longer than a 
pibase-Plugin. But I promise: If you get deeper and depper into the 
"flow" of Extbase & Fluid you will have pretty much fun with it.

Of course it is very incomplete and has some bugs. But I am shure 
Extbase will be the best future of TYPO3 v4.
