Unfortunately I can't look into this ATM due to a very slow internet 
connection.. But did you check the blog example? IIRC I've put a BE 
module there which uses the list view helper..

But, as Dennis mentioned, the whole BE implementation of extbase & fluid 
is still experimental and especially this very view helper is pretty 
hacky because there is a lot of hardcoded stuff in those list views 
(which hopefully changes with the upcoming reworks).

Maybe it helps to insert some temporary debug messages in the vh itself?
