[TYPO3-mvc] Database structure when using ExtBase

When I implement a 1:n relationship in my extension now, it's ok to use 
one field?

Am I still free to choose what table holds the relation? That means I 
can choose if my items table has a category field or my categories table 
has a comma separated items field.
