[TYPO3-shop] Keep seeing help message instead of product list

I am using the latest version of TYPO3 and the latest version of 
tt_products.

I am setting up a small shop for a client just a few products and only using 
offline payment methods.

I have this book too:

I have gone through the steps about basic setup but I don't see my products. 
I have two test products both with 10 items in stock and on the page with 
the product list all I see is the help message, telling me to make sure I 
have a product with at least one in stock and select a desplay mode and 
starting point in the flex form. I have done all of these things and still 
it just shows the help message.

Is there something that I have not done or overlooked?
