Thanks for the tip about the existing code. I'll have a look.

I was actually not really thinking of a display for more than one
currency per item. All I want to be able to do is enter different
currencies for different items. So, while one item's price might have
to be interpreted as US$, another one's is to be understood as EUR,
etc.. I'd be satisfied if I could just display the currency along with
the price and take it into account when I calculate the prices on
checkout. However, I'll see what the existing code does and try fixing
it first before I make more modifications to suit my ideas.
