Exactly. Either a link per mail or - because this is unsecure in times of 
phising etc - they can log in on my site, and then they see a "pay this 
with PayPal" button which is a normal PayPal standard payment button.

Yes, but I don't want that customers have to click on a "buy now" button 
in the middle of the buying process. Also, I think that the return URL 
from standard payment can be faked, i.e. you can trick the Webshop so 
that it thinks the payment was done although it wasn't. To implement this 
with standard payments, I think you would need the Instant Payment 
Notification. But then Express Checkout isn't more work either.

Hm... I checked this and it seems to be true. I always thought you'd have 
to create an account with standard payment, too.

I don't think that there is an API for standard payment. (except Instant 
Payment Notification)

Don't know. But you can get such an account easily by verifying your 
account with a credit card. As far as I know, there are no additional 
fees.
